BIRTHDAY CAKE!!

Happy Birthday!!

It was my Sisters birthday a couple of weeks ago and I didn't have much time to make her a cake, so the day before, I made this chocolate bunt cake and on the day, made the Choux pastry and filled them with fresh whipped cream. I thought I could show you that even if you don't have much time that you can still make quite a pretty cake for either a man or woman (maybe not the bunting with the mans) and everything looks good with icing sugar sifted on top!

The finished product
The cake is a simple chocolate cake 200g of sugar and butter, 150g self raising flour (or plain flour with a couple of tsp of baking powder), 50g of cocoa and 4 eggs. Mix it all together and cook for about 30-45 Min's until a cocktail stick comes out clean.

Make some choux buns, there are many good recipes on the net you can use and fill with fresh whipped cream. I whip mine up with about 50g of sugar and a drizzle vanilla extract.

Bungalows and Bears for a burger and drinks, New India Garden for a delicious curry, York for a nice day christmas and birthday shopping and back down to London for a couple of days then to top it off re-living the days of our 15 year old emo selves, seeing Papa Roach to top it off! Happy Birthday T, I had so much fun! I hope you did too!

Pancakes!!

Good Day Off

One of the easiest things to do in the kitchen, is Pancakes! You can have them with anything! This is how I had mine today!

Ingredients
200g self raising flour
100g butter
Pinch of salt
2 eggs
Enough milk to make a thick batter

Your choice of fruit and yoghurt or whatever you want on top, golden syrup,  maple syrup whatever you like!

Sift the flour in to a bowl and stir in the sugar and salt. Make a hole in the middle and add in the eggs, whisk gently to incorporate the flour at the sides. When it starts to get stiff add milk bit by bit to make a thick batter, at this point if you want some fruit into the mix itself add this now, today I added blackberries! Stir in to incorporate.

Heat up a heavy based pan grease and drop a couple tbsp's of mixture to the size of pancake you want, you can make a couple at a time. Wait until bubbles start to form on top of the pancake and start to pop then turn over until light brown in colour. Top with whatever you like and your done! I ran out of yoghurt today and only had a Muller Corner left so I just used that on mine with an apple.

Eat eat eat!!

Roast Butternut Squash, Carrot and Red Onion Soup

With broth being at the top spot, this may be my joint second favourite soup (I find it hard to choose!) and love making it! Its so easy you probably wont even need this recipe after you've made it once! It's always a good choice and for these cold days recently and even colder to come, (sobs slightly but is happy to wear my winter clothes :) and eat this delicious soup) It's perfect to come home to after a hard, busy day of Christmas shopping or worse... work!

Ingredients
1 Butternut Squash, peeled and medium diced
3 Carrots, washed and medium diced
1 Large Onion, peeled cut in half and each in to 4
2 Celery Sticks
1 Medium Leek
Salt and Pepper
Paprika
Chilli Powder
Dried Coriander (and fresh if you want to garnish)
2 Chicken or Veg Stock Cube

Parmesan
Garlic Bead

This makes a lot of soup. I like to take some to work to make me feel at home in a cold, overly bright office and its also good for portioning up and freezing if you want a meal to hand.

Start off by lining two baking trays with greaseproof paper or baking paper and evenly distribute the butternut, carrots and onion. Drizzle with olive oil (about 1 and 1/2 to two tablespoons each tray) sprinkle with salt and pepper and shake on as much spice and dried coriander and you like, it's all to your taste. As you may know by now I love mine hot so I tend chop up a chilli and add it when I cook the leek and celery.

Cook these on 200°c for about 20-30 mins or until they are browning and just catching on the edges.

Whilst the veg is in the oven you can chop the leek and celery. Roughly chop both because everything will be whizzed up at the end.  Add both to a pan and add a glug of olive oil. Cook them down until both are soft.

Put the kettle on and unwrap the two stock cubes, add the roasted veg to the leeks and celery. mix everything together still on the heat and then add enough water to cover the veg and add the two stock cubes.

this is where I add more water to loosen the soup up, so its not just a big gloopfest. so I add enough to what I like. after one or to times of making this you will know how much you like and what consistency to make it to.

After adding the water, keep on the heat for a further minute and then remove. I use a hand held whizzer, but you can use a blender or if you have neither,  it works just as well to use a potato masher. After mashing return to the heat and just bring to a simmer, then its ready!

I like to have it with a bit of grated Parmesan and garlic bread. and put some fresh coriander on top when I have a bunch At home.

I had this garlic bread left over from a party the night before, these are from Aldi and are delicious!! but if you want to make them yourself, just make a garlic butter, chop up one or two cloves of garlic add to about 50g of butter and add about a table spoon or more of mixed herbs or oregano and spread on to some cooking bread, or a slice of bread. toast until golden and toasted! YUM!

Enjoy! I hope your not too cold this winter!

Tell me what you think!

Quick Couscous

Red pepper couscous for 1

Any time I want something healthy, really quick and filling, I always go for couscous seen as it only takes about 5 minutes.

Ingredients

Half a cup of couscous to a full cup of boiling water (depending on how much you want)
1 - 1 1/2 tbsp olive oil
Half a small onion
1 small pepper
1 garlic clove
1 small chilli
2 tsp Balsamic vinigar
Salt
Pepper
1/2 tsp Paprika
1 tsp dried Oregano
1 tsp dried Coriander
Parmazan

First of all boil the kettle.  Put the couscous into a bowl and pour the boiling water on top cover with a dish and leave until needed.

Dice the onion, chilli, garlic and the pepper into small cubes.  Sometimes I like to add a few olives and cherry tomatoes, if you want to, dice these small too and get rid of the tomato seeds.

In a frying pan heat up the olive oil, add the onions and chilli, sautĂ©e until the onions are almost soft and add the garlic, pepper, seasonings and salt and pepper to taste, stir and add the balsamic. Cook for a couple more minutes.  Grate in some parmazan, add the couscous and stir until it is covered with the all the lovely flavor.

All done!

I like to grate a little bit of parmazan on too or if I have it I add a dollop of cream cheese or cottage cheese.

Happy eating!

Topshop makeup

I recently scribed to ELLE magazine and with the subscription I received a free gift of some Topshop makeup and nail varnish.
It did take a while to get to me but the Make up is really good.

Bronzer

The bronzer in "mohawk" is brilliant, not too dark but obviously when more is applied, the heavier the look. I would buy it again when this runs out.

Lipstick

I do like this lipstick in "whimsical" even though its not really a colour that suits me, I would wear it from time to time but it wouldnt be a go to, plus I prefer matte lipstick and this one is slightly oily. I think that this one will be a gift for my sister.

Eyeliner

From what I have used of this "Magic Liner" it doesnt really stay on for that long I find myself re applying quite a bit unless I use a eye shaddow first, which gives the eyeliner something to grab on to which stays on for longer.

Glow

I really like this Glow highlighter in "Gleam". It gives you a really nice light bronzed glow and looks really natural, I'm glad this came and when it runs out I will definatly be buying it again.

Nail Varnish

I do find that Topshop nailvarnish does chip quite alot from this and other experiences with topshop nail varnish. But I still buy them for the variety of lovely colours and I suppose it stays on for the night or day you need it for.

It looks like winters here!

"Keep Me Warm" Wholesome Veg Stew and Cheesy Scone

Yep it certainly looks like winter is on its way so for those cold days where all you want to do is curl up, drink hot chocolate and eat barrels full of satisfying junk! I found a tasty, healthy, filling main of a hearty veg stew with cheese scones and changed it to how I like it and this is what I came up with!

This picture was from dinner time in Scotland! we had been for long walks in the cold and rain and all we wanted was something to warm us up and easy to cook. All it took was some chopping and mixing and then to chuck everything into a pot and put the scones into the oven. Just enough time to have a shower and chill out before it was ready!

Also just to let you know when I make this I tend to make way too much and freeze the rest or, I am ashamed to say, have many bowls full, I will not judge you if you do the same!!

Simple but delicious, it's not winning any beauty prizes!

Shopping list

(You can use any root veg you want and at any quantity considering how many are eating but this is the veg I used)
Veg or Chicken stock
Celeriac
Carrots
Potato
Parsnip
Leek
Garlic
Celery
Kidney beans
Salt
 Pepper
Can of chopped tomatoes
Tomato puree
Rosemary
Thyme

115g butter
230g self raising flour (or plain and baking powder)
120g cheese (cheddar)
2tbsp chives
5 tbsp milk

All it takes is to chop up all the veg into big chunks, I dice up one or two of the potatoes so they cook and disintegrate and thicken the whole thing just a little bit more.  Heat the oil and fry off the leeks, celery and garlic.  When the leeks are tender, add in the veg and fry for a minute covering all the veg in oil and browning some slightly.  Add the tomatoes, puree and enough stock to just cover the veg.  Add the herbs and spices (the herbs and spices vary to how much you make so add to taste). Stick a lid on and cook for 20 mins on the hob.  Finish the cooking in the oven for 15-20 minutes and add the kidney beans 5 mins towards the end and leave until deep red and bubbling.

Whilst the veg is cooking on the hob make the scones.  Rub the butter into the flour, add the chives and a hand full of cheese and knife in the milk until it becomes a dough.  Roll out to an inch thick and cut roughly into triangles.  Bake on a separate sheet lined with baking paper and cook along with the hotpot on the next shelf down for the remaining 10 - 15 minutes.

Its all cooked when the scones are done and the veg is tender!

Tasty!!

Enjoy!

Let me know what you think!

Hand made cross stitch gift box

It was my friends birthday so I decided to make a hamper.  I love doing hampers for people and by making treats and gifts it doesnt always have to be expensive!

I bought her an Urban Decay eye shadow and decided to make an extra present of a cute little gift box that can be used afterwards. So, as I am a fan of cross stitch I decided to make her a cross stitch padded topped box. She loves florals so I chose a cute little flower design modelled on a similar print in an issue  of cross stitcher magazine.

The eye shaddow came in a see through plasic box whcih made it esier to measure, so first measured the eye shadows length height and diameter and made a box that would fit it making it slightly shorter than the eye shaddow box so its easier to get out and also cut a piece of card slightly taller than the bottom box but shrter than the the eye shaddow so the lid can slip on top and stay on! The lid can be the same size as the bottom piece.

I measured the cross stitch to be the same size as the top of the box plus a few more squares seen as its going to be padded and obviously raised slightly. I used 4 cotton wool pads as padding just because they were pretty much the exact size I needed, also lose cotton wool is a good alternative, just enough to make a slight cushion. Place the cross stitch over the cushioning and fold the excess over two sides so you have two clean sides. Glue with pva and secure with pegs as shown.Trim exess and I chose a piece of card that matches the cross stitch to neaten up the bottom part of the box. All done!!

This is the end hamper I made my friend for her Birthday! as you can see the box is at the front.

I may be makng more hampers in the coming months for christmas so stay tuned!
Happy Making!!

Face time

Hi everyone!!

I thought I'd let you know about my daily make up routine, there may be something you would like to try or let me know if you had problems with something I use and shouldn't be recommending it haha. But this is what I use and think they all are pretty good for makeup on a budget.

Base

Recently I have been using the new "Stay matte" foundation by Rimmel It goes on evenly and feels smooth but at first it felt a bit too clay like but that feeling soon fades and you are left with a nice even finish. Underneath this is "fix and perfect" primer also by Rimmel I really like this primer also with this, when I first put it on it felt a tad to wet but I left it to dry and the coverage is even and it feels smooth to the touch.

I use Bourjois blush and superdrug's own bronzer. I love both they can both be subtle or a bit more makes for a more edgy look. I use the bronzer just touching the underneath of my cheek bone and my blusher slap bang on the cheekbone nearer to the ear. I find this combination very natural. I also dab bronzer on my eye lid up to the brow and also on my neck and collar bone in the indents.

Brushes

First things first I need some new brushes! I do like this black bronzing brush but it doesn't seem to blend the bronzer as well as I would like but the brown bronzing brush I use for my blusher works very well.
My sister has just bought some Real Technique brushes which she cannot praise enough! I have also heard nothing but good reviews about them. is this true? let me know if you use them and if they are as good as everyone says? They might be In My basket by pay day.

Eyes and Brows

I use Bourjois brown eye shadow and use it in many different ways either light or heavy (for a heavy brown I usually dab the brush in some water first this makes the colour deepen)  over the top lid depending on my mood and another is just in the crease of the lid and the bottom lid on the eyelash line. I also use this eyebrow pencil in "002 Hazel", obviously following the brow line. I also use a lip liner brush for my eye shadow, I told you I needed new brushes haha.

My Must have Mascara is "Lash Accelerator" by Rimmel, It is the best one I think I have ever used. I use it for every day and for going out and most of the time don't feel the need to wear false lashes. I only do this when I really want to glam up. I use Bourjois kohl eyeliner on my upper and lower inside lid and use this maybelline gel eyeliner with this Barry M eyeliner brush which I love! And clean regularly.

Going out.

The Left Bank

This June My good friend Charlotte started a placement at a studio in Huddersfield called The Left Bank. She is loving every minute of it and keeps telling me all the things she does to help out in the Left Bank studio. All of what she is doing sounds so fun and she seems to be learning a lot in the process, which is brilliant because she deserves every good thing she gets!

At The left bank they do everything! From initial ideas to manufacturing and do this to a very high standard, everything looks great! You only need to look at the reviews on the Asos market place to see what I mean. everyone likes what they order. I may not like all of their designs but there are a few pieces that I love! Like the floral beanie. I am a sucker for a good beanie and this floral beauty is defiantly going into my shopping basket! Along with the Skyline Cropped Polo which is also very pretty! As some things they make are one offs, I would keep checking their Blog on Asos marketplace to see what’s coming up or there may be something you miss!! If only pay day was closer!!
Also, their most recent fan is Plan B! Who was recently seen wearing one of their tees on stage! Check out more on their Blog!

Happy shopping!

The new girl

Well my first day went well! 3 hours of pattern cutting flew by last wednesday. Only ever used an industrial sewing machine once and forgot how fast they are! We've pretty much just been tought the basics, obviously on our first lesson, but everything and everyone seems nice. I didnt realise how big York college was! Its HUGE! The only thing they have to fix is the webcam they take your student card picture with!! I'm joking but my picture isn't winning any prises! Hopefully through this course if any of you are interested in pattern cutting I can tell you if this is a good course for you or just give you hints and tips I pick up along the way!

Happy making!

Wish me luck!!

Hi everyone!!

Just a quick one, I'm starting 3, 30 day challenges including squats, arms and abs. These 3 tables I just download from google.
(Not waiting until monday so I have an extra weekend to eat more junk like I would usually do, so this is a good sign!)

I'm going to stick it out and won't quit! Let me know if you have done any of these before I'd love to hear about how you got on with them or if they are actually any good, or start them with me! Some company would be great!

I'll check in half way and let you know how its going! And at the end I'll share my results and if I see any improvements.

Good luck if your starting too!

Lets do this!!

In the tub!

It's bath time!!
Here is what I use and some tips for keeping your hair and face glowing! I'm not the best at having new hair styles, how ever much I would like to try them ( I do like to change the colour more than anything), so I like to make it look as shiny and healthy as possible!

_________________________________________

HAIR

I've been trying for a while to find the perfect combination of hair products to keep my hair shiny and healthy on a budget! especially as I swim a lot I tend to get dry and brittle hair which splits and breaks very easily. Everyone's hair is different and what I use may not be ok for everyone but what I swear by now for my hair is alternate shampoos of Aussie "take the heat" and Pantene pro V XL "volume and body" I think this is one of the best volume shampoos, if its quick volume you want this one is good for you. I also dry my hair upside down for a bigger finish.

After my hair regime

When I use the volume and body shampoo I will use a spray heat protector like the Vo5 one pictured Which also give your hair a lovely shine and smells pretty nice too, I use this every time I straighten or curl. And when I use the heat protect shampoo I will use a voluming mousse like the TRESemmé one shown It makes your hair very thick and healthly the only thing I don't like about It is sometimes it leaves a rubbery kind of feeling to your hair, which does fade after a while.

BODY

I first found this honey soap shopping for a mothers Birthday present, and since that great day I get it every time I'm in a cash splashing mood because for soap its quite a luxury. From LUSH, it's called "honey I washed the kids" £3.40 per 100g but well worth it! it leaves your skin feeling so smooth and smell delicious and I find that there is no need to moisturise afterwards although if I do I'll always use Nivia or Cien.

Alternate to the soap the shop assistant recommended the "its raining men" shower gel for hair and body, so this is my next one to try. I'll let you know what its like. LUSH are also against animal testing which (as a Vegi and a lover of all animals) I wholeheartedly support!

LUSH's animal testing logo

FACE:

I'm lucky in the fact that I don't get that many spots and I have quite good skin, the only thing I battle with is the odd patches of dry skin which stay at bay with this nifty relaxing trick I picked up. When you have the time for a nice relaxing bath armed with only a flannel and a pot of Vaseline, evenly spread the Vaseline over your face avoiding the eye area to a medium thickness and place a warm damp flannel over the top obviously make sure you can breathe and leave on for a couple of minutes re-soaking the flannel, keeping it warm. wipe off then you are done. You can also do this whilst your conditioner is in to save some time. Also this is supposed to be good for wrinkles. I'll never had such bright healthy skin!

After I wash my face I rise it with freezing cold water to close the pores and try to not use make up for a little while to let my skin breathe.

Enjoy your tub time!

Let me know whats good for you, I would love to try some new products out.

Refreshing hot salsa!

MY SALSA

This quick and easy salsa only takes about 15 minutes to make ( just a lot of chopping!) As you can see everything is just roughly diced quite small. You can use as much or as lttle as you like of anything but I really like all these flavors together. also the time I choose to blog about my favorate salsa the avocado had gone off!! but I thought what better way to show you that you don't have to follow a recpe than this! (but adding the avocado does bring the whole salsa together.)

Shopping List

2-3 medium sized tomatoes
2 small or 1 medium (prefferably red) onion
1 stick of celery
1 chilli
a handful of radishes
1 bell pepper
1 avocado
about 1-2 tps of olive oil
1 lime
salt and pepper
corriander (dried or fresh)

How to:

Roughly dice everything I like to remove the seeds from the tomato before chopping it, I'd normally leave them in for other dishes but for this it makes the mixture slightly too wet. add all chopped veg into one bowl and mix together. add the oil and then season to taste. if it's not that spicy or you just want to add an extra bite then I like to add either hot chilli power or paprika! Squeese over the lime and your done!!

This salsa can be eaten with many things or on its own. I make it for partys and have a bag of Tortilla chips and/or as a healthier option some gem letiuce and some yoghurt if wanted.

It's also great with Burritos, fajitas, tacos and anything really!

Enjoy!

Say no to diets...

...Say yes to eating healthily! My top tips for eating better. helping towards a healthier you!
I'm in the same boat as so many people sharing the same goal as me. To get fitter and healthier but not having a mad chuck out session of everything bad in your kitchen. Lets do this together and whatever your goal is, whether it's to just look good in THAT dress, loose however many pounds you have in mind, maintain the same weight you are now or just a new healthier you!

I'm just getting into this myself, its not always easy and yes it might be hard at times but eating healthily is not a fad diet it doesnt cut out any foods, its just a way of keeping track of what actually goes into your body.
So lets get started! Here are a few starter points:

• DON'T ban any foods.
If you are thinking of completely cutting out one food group think again! Restricting yourself from anything is just going to make you want it more. Have a little of what you like every now and then to stop you from missing it or worse binging on it!!

Take chocolate for example say "I'm not going to eat any chocolate for a month!" Whats the first thing you want? Even if you dont eat it that much, as soon as you deny yourself, I guarantee you will want it more.

My pitfall... Carbs I thought people where crazy to deny themselves anything bread, pasta or rice related. So I tried it and from breakfast to dinner I was craving a huge sandwhich or a massive vat of pasta!!

• Exercise! We must exersise to burn off extra calories that just healthy eating cannot. Exercise does not mean joining a gym or having to spend a thing! Make your own exercise routine, have you got stairs? A garden? A street?! You can get fit anywhere!
Obviously there is a choice of fittness dvds and yes they are brilliant and millions to choose from, from yoga to kickboxing and everything in between. But even then if you do it every day you may get bored of it. Unless you can get an array.

If not, go running with a friend or join a running club. Set yourself your own routine at home, there are many web sites and books to help you find the right exercises for you! Run up and down stairs, do squats whilst brushing your teeth, every little helps!

• Always eat breakfast! Everyone knows this meal sets you up for the day! Also it has been proven that eating breakfast will help you burn more calories throughout the day!

• eat lots of fibre!! Fruit, veg, oats, wheat and pulses are high in fibre keeping you fuller for longer.

• Drink lots of water! Water is good for EVERYTHING, keeping you hydrated, fresh, allert and is helpfull in loosing weight. If you drink a big glass of water before and throughout eating you tend to get fuller faster.

I'll put some more hopefully helpful tips up as I find them myself, or as I remember them :D

Tomato and avacado power salad

POWER SALAD

I read in 'Women's Health' recently that avocado and tomatoes together are the perfect combo, and when eaten together, you absorb 15 times more of the tomatoes cell-defending benefits than you would just eating a tomato.
So, I have come up with this simple salad which is delicious and as explained above, so good for you!! and most of the stuff you will have at home.

Shopping list
1 small or 1/2 a big Avocado
1 big or a hand full of small tomato(s) of your choice
1/2 a Mozzarella ball
Olives
Basil
Salt
pepper
Olive oil
Balsamic vinegar

Slice the tomatoes into circles and cut the avocado into thin wedges arrange onto a plate and tear up the cheese and place on top. scatter over the olives and basil, season with salt and pepper and drizzle over the olive oil and the balsamic vinegar.
ALL DONE!

Food books and dates

I love "The Works" I nearly always check here first before I get a book in another shop or online (mostly Amazon or eBay). They always have a good selection of books and most of the time they are better than half price from the RRP.

As you can see the books are very cheap and I got this simple, smart black 2014 diary for only £1.99!!

I'll try some recipes out and let you know if they are any good!!

Storage and comfort

I have a lot of bits and bobs lying around and sometimes cant find the things I need so, the other day, I
bought this floral folding basket £3.99 from The Works and this baroque style pink box £7.99 from Tk Maxx.

I've put all my cross stitch stuff in the floral basket and all my craft magazines in the pink box which is really sturdy.

And now everything is where i need it. Just a little post but there are a lot of nice storage containers in Tk Maxx just now and they are pretty reasonably priced.

Also both from Matalan these cushions were only £5 each on sale! BARGAIN!
The fruit and veg one would be perfect for an outside chair or in a greenhouse.
and the blue striped would go anywhere!
And i got this black and white stripy big knit throw form Ikea For £15. its so comfy and warm such a good buy.
The little pockets are perfect for the little things that you would normally loose at the bottom of your box.

Bits and bobs and H&M

I think I need help with my spending haha but nevermind I found a couple of buys around town the other day.

The first picture is a top from Topshop that I sore BeyoncĂ© wearing in a magazine I bought. Its a bit steep at £14 but I really like the aztecz, animal print. I find that alot of aztecz can be quite tacky but I really like this one its quite elegant in a way. I really like it. money well spent!

The next photo is a table cloth I bought from TK MAXX, it was £14.99 which is brilliant for Ralph Lauren and its beautiful. You will no doubt be seeing it in later pictures of it lining the table for a cream tea or some kind of delicious cake picture.

The next few pictures of clothes are from H&M. The purple net jumper drapes quite low at the back wich is really pretty, nice to wear with a black bikini top.
The wu tang tee is really nice it goes to mid thigh and is really comfy. I dont normally like band tee's from high street sellers but I do really like them and the tee is really nice. Also can be nice worn as a dress.
The stripy long v neck shirt with the jag face on it is also mid thigh length. you may look like you have just reffed a foodtball match but I really like it paired with some leggings or shorts. the rings were around £3 and the hat also £3.

Also I painted my nails polka dot! its easy to do just choose a base colour and a dot colour and after the base coat is fully dried and just dot the polka dots evenly spaced around the nail and preferably would look better with two coats. finish off with a clear top coat!
